Inks — Frequently Asked Questions
Dye-based inks are water-soluble, flow freely, and come in a vast range of colors. They are safe for all fountain pens but may not be water-resistant. Pigmented inks use suspended particles for better water resistance and archival quality, but require more frequent pen cleaning to prevent clogging. For everyday use, dye-based inks are recommended.
Shimmer inks contain fine metallic particles that create a sparkling effect on paper. They work best on smooth, fountain-pen-friendly paper. Shake the bottle before filling to distribute the particles evenly. Clean your pen more frequently when using shimmer inks, as the particles can settle in the feed. Popular shimmer inks include Diamine Shimmertastic and Sailor Manyo series.
Store bottled ink upright in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep the cap tightly sealed to prevent evaporation and contamination. Most quality inks have a shelf life of several years when stored properly. Avoid storing ink in areas with high humidity or temperature fluctuations.
For vintage pens with rubber sacs or celluloid bodies, use pH-neutral, non-iron-gall inks. Avoid highly acidic inks (like some iron gall formulas) and inks with lubricants that may swell rubber. Safe choices include Pilot Iroshizuku, Diamine standard inks, and Waterman inks. Always test with a small amount first and clean the pen promptly after use.
