Fountain Pens — Frequently Asked Questions

For beginners, we recommend the Pilot Metropolitan, Lamy Safari, or TWSBI Eco. These pens offer smooth writing, easy maintenance, and excellent value. The Pilot Metropolitan is especially popular for its metal construction and reliable nib performance at an affordable price point.

To clean a fountain pen, flush the nib and feed with room-temperature water until the water runs clear. For cartridge/converter pens, remove the cartridge or converter and run water through the section. For piston fillers, fill and empty the barrel several times with clean water. Allow the pen to air-dry before refilling with ink.

For everyday writing, a Fine (F) or Medium (M) nib is most versatile. Japanese nibs (Pilot, Sailor, Platinum) run narrower than European nibs of the same size, so a Japanese Medium writes like a European Fine. If you write on thin paper or prefer precise lines, start with Fine. For a wetter, more expressive line, choose Medium or Broad.

Most water-based fountain pen inks are compatible with any fountain pen. Avoid using India ink, calligraphy ink, or acrylic ink in fountain pens as these can clog and damage the feed. Stick to inks specifically labeled for fountain pens from brands like Pilot, Diamine, Sailor, or Iroshizuku for best results.
